This has been a thorn in my side for quite a while, but have you known that Apple charges people in Japan over 40% more for apps bought in the App Store?
I asked several developers and they said they weren’t even aware, they only set the US price. So why on earth does Apple do that? Why is there no mentioning of this, and more: where the hell does all the money go Apple is overcharging?
In general all prices on the Japanese App Store are about 40% higher than in the US. This is not due to taxes (5% VAT in Japan, e.g. the German Apple Store is still cheaper than Japan despite 19% VAT).
For example “Hype“—a cool app I was about to buy allowing you to create HTML5/CSS3 animations without writing a line of code, is US$ 29.99 in the US App Store. On the App Store Japan it costs ¥3,500, converted into US$ that’s 42.73, a price inflation of 42%.
It’s not that I couldn’t afford that price, I just cannot accept that I have to pay over 40% more just because Apple thinks it’s cool to rip-off people who live in Japan or happen to have a Japanese credit card. The developers have no idea and are surprised, even baffled and they have no idea where that money goes either.
I personally will not buy any more applications on the App Store and will tell everyone I know to stay away from it until there’s a transparent fair pricing scheme for the international stores in place. This is unacceptable. I and many others are outraged. I have sent feedback to Apple about this and I hope many others follow suit.
Update:
Thanks to a friend’s Tweet I just learned that Apple have removed the Yen conversion penalty. The app “Hype” e.g. now costs only ¥2,600. So they not only have removed the penalty they also finally have updated their conversion rates U$ ←→ ¥ to real-world values!

Ich kaufe öfters bei “Manufactum” ein. Hier läuft dasselbe: z.B. eine Hose kostet bis zu 40% mehr bei manufactum.ch als bei manufactum.de. Dasselbe bei “grüne Erde”. Ich löse das Problem, indem ich auf der deutschen Seite Einkaufe, und die Ware nach Deutschland schicken lasse.
Die Preise werden nicht danach festgelegt, was das Produkt Wert ist, sondern danach, was der Kosument (ausgehend von Lebenshaltungskosten etc.) in dem jeweiligen Land zahlen kann. Ein zentrales Problem in der Schweiz. Fast alle Waren aus dem Ausland sind hier teurer.
Das ist mir ja auch wurst, so lange ich diesen »Rip-off« umgehen kann. So kaufe ich halt Software »beim Erzeuger« direkt anstatt über den App Store, aber es gibt leider auch ein paar wenige Entwickler, deren Software jetzt nur noch ausschließlich über den App Store vertrieben wird, und denen sage ich halt auch, was ich davon halte.
Früher haben sich die Leute aufgeregt, wenn die Macs in einigen Ländern massiv teurer waren als in den USA (auch unter Berücksichtigung der horrenden MWSt die in der EU so üblich sind), da hat Apple auch zumindest Teilweise reagiert, aber das mit dem App Store könnte viel weitreichendere Konsequenzen haben.
Allein die Tatsache, dass mir hier in Japan halt niemand Deutsche Popmusik verkaufen will/kann/darf macht mich zwangsläufig zum Piraten. Oder Netflix würde ich sofort abonnieren, wenns nur zu haben wäre. Es gibt in Japan keine attraktiven Angebote in dem Bereich.
Hier stehe ich mit offenem Geldbeutel: Hallo ich will Eure Scheiße ja kaufen, würde mal jemand so gnädig sein mein Geld entgegenzunehmen? Aber ich höre halt nur Grillen zirpen. Wie Steve Jobs schon sagte:
»It’s better to be a Pirate, than to join the Navy!«
